چکیده

The main tectonic features in our study region are indicated in Fig. S1. We use 190 earthquakes for the iterative structure inversion (Fig. S2a). Most of the earthquakes are shallow (< 30 km), occurred from 1996 to 2011 (Fig. S3), and are evenly distributed along the North Atlantic Ridge and the Mediterranean-Himalayan belt. Initial source parameters (e.g., centroid time, location, etc.) are collected from the Global Centroid-Moment-Tensor (CMT) website (www.globalcmt.org). All source parameters are reinverted in the 3D global starting model using 3D Green’s functions calculated based on a spectral-element method (SEM) [1, 2, 3, 4]. To obtain good azimuthal coverage, seismic waveforms recorded by

Adjoint models of mantle convection with seismic, plate motion, and stratigraphic constraints: North America since the Late Cretaceous

[1] We apply adjoint models of mantle convection to North America since the Late Cretaceous. The present-day mantle structure is constrained by seismic tomography and the time-dependent evolution by plate motions and stratigraphic data (paleoshorelines, borehole tectonic subsidence, and sediment isopachs). We infer values of average upper and lower mantle viscosities, provide a synthesis of Nor...

Full seismic waveform tomography for upper-mantle structure in the Australasian region using adjoint methods

S U M M A R Y We present a full seismic waveform tomography for upper-mantle structure in the Australasian region. Our method is based on spectral-element simulations of seismic wave propagation in 3-D heterogeneous earth models. The accurate solution of the forward problem ensures that waveform misfits are solely due to as yet undiscovered Earth structure and imprecise source descriptions, thu...

Simultaneous inversion of mantle properties and initial conditions using an adjoint of mantle convection

[1] Through the assimilation of present-day mantle seismic structure, adjoint methods can be used to constrain the structure of the mantle at earlier times, i.e., mantle initial conditions. However, the application to geophysical problems is restricted through both the high computational expense from repeated iteration between forward and adjoint models and the need to know mantle properties (s...

Profiling the robustness, efficiency and limits of the forward-adjoint method for 3D mantle convection modelling

Knowledge of Earth’s past mantle structure is inherently unknown. This lack of knowledge presents problems in many areas of Earth science, including in mantle circulation modelling (MCM). As a mathematical model of mantle convection, MCM’s require boundary and initial conditions. While boundary conditions are readily available from sources such as plate reconstructions for the upper surface, an...
